The girls set out for the library immediately, small duffel bags slung across their shoulders. Olivia carried her journal in her bag, and Alexis brought a couple of notebooks and some pencils, just in case they needed to write anything down. According to Olivia the library was just outside the main thoroughfare of town in a small nook near the Blue Ridge forest. It was also a museum and Olivia said there were even some cool artifacts relating to Beale and Morriss. She said a lot of the books were from the old town library and even from Morriss’s private collection so maybe some of them would be books that Beale actually used or was familiar with. It was worth a shot. Besides, Alexis felt they were getting closer to cracking the mystery right open.

Peeking through the oak-hickory trees and gnarled pines, Alexis saw the library ahead. She and Olivia made their way through the shrubbery and smaller hemlock trees until they arrived at the most magical building Alexis had seen so far.

The library looked like it belonged in a fairy tale with the bright greenish blue leaves of the Virginia creeper growing up the sides of its brick walls. The vine’s signature dark purple berries grew in small clusters giving the building an extra splash of color within the shadowed forest trees. The perimeter was a thick circle of rose bushes speckled with flowers and buds in every color imaginable. Alexis could actually smell their sweet aroma on the summer breeze. Old-fashioned cast iron lampposts surrounded the library, as if waiting for the evening so they could light up and be sentries keeping the building protected. The front door was the crowing jewel. Two solid oak doors arched upward to a pointed top. Black iron latticework weaved its way from the outer edges of the doors to the center, pointing to giant rust-colored handles.

Olivia stepped ahead and swung one of the heavy doors wide letting Alexis walk in first. Alexis made a quick survey of the inside. The single story building was actually just one big room with an exit door in the back and a handful of rectangular shaped windows on the walls. The right half was all display cases and roped off bookshelves, obviously the museum part of the library. The left half consisted of about thirty rows of ten foot tall bookshelves, each row with the dewy decimal system labeled on the side. As a divider between the two different sections, there were two long dark wooden tables with matching benches for people to sit on and study or read. A card catalogue stood between the two tables. Olivia b-lined her way there.

Following Olivia, Alexis kept her eyes to the right, fascinated by the museum displays filled with antique furniture and glass-encased documents and books.

They arrived at the card catalogue and Olivia began her search. After a few brief moments she pulled out a card.

“Battle of Thermopylae. Let’s check it out.” Olivia moved toward the designated shelf and it only took her a few seconds to find the book.
